Looks near the cladding, and looks like carbon diffusion to me. That the cladding have been slightly "mixed" with the core steels alloys near the weld, might be the explanation.

That makes a ton of sense!

Which version is better overall?
The SKD or White #2

SKD would have my preferences - gets nearly as keen but longer edge retention.

But really both are a good purchase.

In the Amekiri gyuto I have slight preference for SKD (retention, retention, retention) but both are great knives.

SKD, SLD and white are the steels Yoshi is best known for.
