As far as I know the titanium doesn’t magnetize or even the gold

Correct. Neither Gold nor titanium are magnetic.

I have no knowledge or experience, but I'm going to restore this old thing. What could go wrong?

GF has a modern, USA made version of a katana. Bought without consulting me, a long story.

She bought several cases of tatami mats for soaking and slicing, which she did. Scared the f*** out of me to watch. Both for the sake of GF bodily integrity and the potential for dammages to this (ridiculously overpriced) sword shaped object.

Then, when it slowed down, she asked me if I could sharpen this?

I did look up some web sites of those who have a reputation for sword sharpening. EVERY SINGLE ONE said something like " expect to RUIN the first sword you TRY to sharpen".

NOPE. Been sharpening everything from pocket through hunting and kitchen knives for 50 years. NOT TOUCHING THIS.

"A man's got to know his
    (edit)
    limitations".

Yup, including tossing off unverified quotes you half remember.
