Hi everyone
ZEN Knife has been a sponsor on the KKF forum for two months. During these two months of interaction with everyone, I have gained a clearer understanding of your needs and preferences. Last month, I released a Honyaki product and received various customized orders from over twenty friends. I am still busy fulfilling those custom orders. Along the way, I have connected with a new polishing partner to improve the appearance of my products. In the coming period, I will gradually unveil some representative Honyaki custom products.

Turning to this month’s product, the first item to be unveiled is a knife with a unique structure. The design inspiration comes from @Kippington Kippington on the forum. I am very grateful for him sharing his design. For this knife, I experimented with a brand new processing method, including digital 3D modeling and CNC machining. Because of the use of CNC machines, I incorporated some bold designs: a 4mm thick blade heel and a 2mm thick spine, featuring a design full of mechanical elements. Since this knife is my first creation based on knowledge learned from KKF (with help from @Yoshi Yoshi), I named it the KKF-01.

I will post some cutting test videos to provide a direct view of this knife’s performance. Due to issues with the manufacturing process of the sample, it was made quite rough, but it already fully demonstrates the performance.

Materials used:
Regarding the handle, this is a significant advancement for me. I have finally broken free from dependency on handle factories (which had unbearable minimum order quantities). Now I can make any specification and material of wa handles as I please. This time, I made a handle for this knife from Okoume and brass with a shield-shaped structure. I will post some pictures of the handle details. The handle dimensions in the pictures are not designed for this knife (they are for my apexultra product), but the configuration and processing standards are the same. The final dimensions will be adjusted.

Here are some parameters of this knife:

  • Blade length: 230mm
  • Cutting edge length: 220mm
  • Width: 49mm
  • Spine thickness: 4mm to 2mm
  • Weight: 140g
  • Hardness: DC53 at HRC 62, CR-10 (VG-10) at HRC 60
  • Packaging: Wooden box
  • Pre-order price: $259, retail price: $329.
  • Order collection period: to august 15. production cycle: about 25 days.
  • Shipping: $15 to most parts of the US, Europe, and Australia (please contact me for VAT-inclusive areas to discuss a reasonable VAT fee solution). Shipping knives is quite a hassle due to their classification as sensitive and dangerous items, resulting in different shipping quotes for many countries. I hope you understand. Last month, I promised free shipping on a product, and for a $129 knife, I ended up paying $100 for shipping to a certain country. Therefore, I am no longer promising free shipping for subsequent products.

If you like my work, please share it with your friends. This is very important for me as a small knife maker in the early stages of my career.
Once again, thank you to KKF and the friends on KKF. Without your support, I couldn’t have grown so quickly.

Thank you for reading.

Which steel is better? Or do I just get one of each?
In addition to being less rust-resistant than vg10, dc53 steel is more wear-resistant and more impact-resistant. The cutting feel is also closer to carbon steel than the vg10. Normal use does not have to worry about rust prevention. Of course, soaking in the kitchen sink overnight still rusts.
If you're willing to compromise a little on rust protection. The dc53 is a very good choice.
