Scene one, take two! This time it's a personalized order for a customer. It's very similar to the previous handle that I made with a few small variations. An angle at the end of the handle, a slightly longer ferrule and a length to respect of 130mm. Very happy with the result!

Is that boiled or raw Linseed oil? I got 1L of the raw type cause I read it penetrates wood better.
The only issue is it takes a few days to dry unlike the boiled type.
Nice work.
Boiled linseed oil isnt actually "boiled". It's typically linseed oil mixed with various additives like petroleum and heavy metal solvents which help to speed up drying time. Certainly not something you would want to put on a cutting board that comes in direct contact with food, but it's probably OK for something like a knife handle that doesn't normally touch your food. There's always a tradeoff I guess.

This is what I use 👍

A new collaboration between me and @MSicardCutlery but this time for Santoku in AEB-L which will be sold at my store. I ordered 6 knives from Matt and obviously I make the handles myself before putting them on sale. The wood I chose is teak burl combined with a simplistic micarta and brass separation. Clean, sober and elegant!

Sweet!

Three new handles! I have to dress some blades so no rest for me today, again 😅

They are all rokkaku hanmaru shape and 132mm long. I'm starting to make handles with a little more tapering and I'm thinning the ferrule as much as possible to have a better pinch grip. So here are the wood species in order :

1 - Stabilized curly maple, ebony spacer and stabilized zebra wood ferrule

2 - Roasted oak, black and gold resin and stabilized zebra wood ferrule

3 - Pau Amarillo, black and white spacers and pheasant wood ferrule

Soooooo shimmery 😍

Today I tried heirloom construction on my handle and let me tell you, If you see this kind of finish on a handle, a lot of respect is due to the person who made it.

It's definitely a lot more complicated than I thought and plus I didn't even do a few funky angles. This was my first try at it, I've already found a thing or two to help me but still. I'm happy with the result, especially after 4 attempts today. Wood is cocobolo and a pheasant wood cap on a 205mm gyuto honyaki not yet polish 😅

Yesterday was the last polish of the year and this evening here is the last handle of 2023!

Oh how I am in love with this wood. It's spalted tamarind with a carbon fiber and gold leaf end cap. This handle will be used to dress a 205mm honyaki gyuto in Sheffcut steel, which will be on sale when I finish polishing it.

A big thank you to everyone who chose me for their handle in 2023. Since the beginning I have really learned a lot and my technique and finish seems to be light years ahead of 6 months ago! I will continue to create custom handles for your projects and I will obviously get even better with time. Thanks again for your interest in my creations 🙂

I had a few handles to do for Matt recently and here is the latest of a custom Magna Cut knife. A beautiful classic and elegant style with a pheasant wood base, Buckeye burl ring and black micarta spacers. The customer asked for a ferrule a little longer than what I am used to and above all to have the balance point as close as possible to the heel. Very happy with the result!

Handles like great.

For the later ones with shorter ferrules, consider the durability as they may be more likely to crack. I would beat the hell out of one for about 6 months to test it out,

Another day, another project! Well, I've been wanting to have a little more fun with brass for some time and I finally took the time to experiment today. I want to create texture, a feeling, a little magical touch that is so discreet. I'm happy with this test but I'm still far from Karys' result 😅

I like the vibe, It looks like Roman armor or something. I'm going to try to sculpt more intensely for the next tests 👍
