After reading the fantastic history written by Omega I've caught the bug and would really like to try a konosuke fujiyama... hoping for a pretty newish example, though I'll be aiming to use it and sharpen it etc, so I don't need a brand new in the box example. I've called out blue #2 as I'm not looking for a tiny production number, super special case here... aiming for entry level knife to see what all the fuss is about!

I think I have a sense of fair value for these at this point, but happy to discuss.

Thanks!

You have to remember that production numbers were low and dealers were few for the blue 2 fujis. Togo would get a dozen or so in early summer and late fall usually. Sold in seconds. Tosho same thing but times may have been different. Blue 2 fujis stayed pretty consistent until the end in early 17. The 16s and 17s showed wayyyyy more machining marks above the bevel line than the earlier did. Try to find one that hasn’t been thinned and retained its true geometry. Good luck finding one, they are wonderful knives..... wish I would have kept all my fuji variants.

I'm open to other steels, just under the impression the blue #2 might be towards the most plentiful...

Might be a tough find, but I'm a patient knife nerd!

I’d say your best bet would be a white 2. They were fine for a home environment but not well suited for the rigorous pro settings. Older fujis are very elusive nowadays, so I’d agree - be patient and keep your eyes peeled to bst posts.

Good luck with your search. They are out there somewhere. I’m one of the lucky ones I kept a white 2 and blue 2 240’s

Blue #2 SHOULD be most plentiful- only a few retailers in the world got Fujiyama, and the largest volume, by far, went to ToGo. For some reason, people really really gravitated towards the Blue 2 over the other White offerings, and so ToGo placed their orders accordingly, ordering disproportionately for that steel than others.

Funny enough, the White steels variants often sat in stock for weeks, where as the B2s were gone super quick.
So as a proportion of whats out in the wild? B2 should be most plentiful.

As far as differences between the steel variants? Unbelievably minor. Check the choil shots in the write up I did.. or I can grab a few more for you if you want a different look / comparison. The biggest differences will come by Year, not by Steel. As was pointed out before, though- the less sharpened its been, the better.
