Tamahagane

I ran across this YouTube clip that I found very interesting. It deals with Tamahagane steel … it’s manufacture and subsequent forging into a knife. I found it very interesting. I’m posting it in the event others may find it interesting also.

i also had sold one a year ago. thick as hell, but good HT and steel.

I contacted this blacksmith for a 240mm gyuto. Price was 200,000 JPY

Well … I guess you’re not likely to find a rack of them at C&M. In some ways that’s probably a very reasonable price.

I wanted one of those zubeng forge tamahagane knives 10yrs ago but couldn't ever find one for sale second hand.

Im inclined to agree.

that said, tamahagane is sword steel, and a sword is not a kitchen knife and a kitchen knife is not a sword, so spending that kind of money on a somewhat rustically finished knife wouldnt be worth it to me personally.

I think it's super cool he's continuing the tradition it's just that the tradition doesnt mean enough to me to justify the ask. at that price, Im more interested in other knives unfortunately.
