    New Years Resolutions?

I don't generally do resolutions, but after the Shakespearean experience that was last year? Sure. Less crying, more adventure Practice sharpening A 'New to me' car Dump the extra job (hopefully) Remember how to laugh If the sharpening goes well, perhaps a knife or two or...[emoji12]

i'm new to wearing glasses. in the kitchen.

Glasses fogging up are the story of my life. There's no good trick, except like anything else, repeated exposure/experience will teach you what works best for you to avoid it as best you can. Nothing will keep them from fogging coming out of the walk-in, and I just "learned" to turn my head to...

    Liver Transplant

This. Precisely. That's why I'm so concerned I'll be disqualified for something silly up front. Reality says this could go completely pear shaped at any moment. He starts the battery of tests tomorrow to see if he's fit for surgery. Before this started? Absolutely!! With the trouble...

    Liver Transplant

Thanks all. I have enough knowledge to know the basics of how all this goes down. I've simply been in information blackout because I'm several hundred miles away. The more specific question I have, is when will a transplant team move to get a living donor vs a cadaver donor. The list...

    Liver Transplant

Indeed. Research says about 70% is taken, and it usually regenerates in 4-8 weeks. I suppose I'm just trying to get info because the protocols to determine eligibility seem maddeningly slow. Grrrrrrr. I can only find generic info regarding the criteria for both recipients and donors...

    Liver Transplant

Way off the usual topics around here, but... Anyone have any experience with Liver Transplants? Looks like my Dad is in need of a new one. Acute Liver Failure is no joke. Not a knife or cooking question - but this is as varied a group of people and professions as I've found anywhere :)...

The Next Grand-Palooza Knife Fight Event Extraordinaire -- Minneapolis 2017

Not sure how I missed this thread for so long, but I will move hell itself to make it. Even if only to be able to meet some of you in person, and say Thanks for fueling Danny's passions. :urweird: I'm not nearly as smart and funny as he was, but I'm getting my legs back underneath me a...

salting your food before you taste it?

Tastes differ wildly, and biology does play a role. But the initial point was (I think) the assumption that a dish needs something before you even taste it. I say taste it first. Then, go with Flying Spaghetti Monster and salt/pepper/soy/hotsauce all you want. It's going in your mouth, not...

Seasoning my new 32cm De Buyer Acier Carbone

I'm so excited!! Like giddy schoolgirl excited. My very own Mineral B should arrive tomorrow!!! I've been stalking prices since Danny passed, and I didn't get to keep ours. Amazon had a great deal on the fry pan I wanted, and I get to season over the next few evenings before hopefully...

salting your food before you taste it?

Growing up, salt was always on the table, and generally needed. I got into the really bad habit of salting before tasting... Then I grew up, was able to explore the adventurous side of my tastes and realized, for us, the salt was a direct result of not knowing how to use other seasonings...

Portable Butane Stove - Iwatani 35FW Worth the Price?

I am currently in a place that doesn't have a stove. I got a simple butane stove from the supply house I work for and have been completely pleased. I didn't go fancy or high end at all. Easy set up, stable, easy clean up. I can use it with anything, and was actually very pleasantly surprised...

    Just...D***it Danny!

Mostly, I'm just sticking to standard fare. But, I've been experimenting with some Indian food, and my own spin on Asian flavors. I don't have a ton of time these days, and it's just me, so project cooking is still a little further on the path. Recently I made some date and walnut burfi...

    Just...D***it Danny!

Today feels like a good day for an update. The title of the thread is still true, and still comes out of my mouth daily. There are moments when it feels like he is being ripped out of each cell of my body, and I hate the universe and all the gods I may or may not believe in for whatever part...

    Uses for gochujang

I can't put my hands on the recipe at the moment, but I have used it when roasting sweet potatoes or other root veggies to give them a little spice and balance. Turned out beautifully.
