when its not cutting as fast as i expect it to, or the loading on the surface impacts the feeling of the stone (i.e. sharpie loads up on the surface a lot)
As an estimate, approximately how many stones, or how much sharpening time is there between using the Nagura for the 1K and 6K stones? My 6K got deposits fairly quickly, but it didn't appear to affect sharpening speed, so I assume that you don't use the Nagura if the stone only looks dirty but appears to cut well.
thats hard to say... but the gist of it is when it doenst cut as you would expect it to, thats the time to use the nagura
