Missed that. Dang! Thanks Eamon, in that case I know its not possible but I am changing to birch grown in Southern Utah so it absorbed all the iron from the sand and made it red. :scratchhead:

I would have guessed oregon maple like most here. I'm curious to know. :)

Spalted Maple burl?? Great contest, even if your wrong, you can still win!! Kinda like being a weatherman!! :)

Ill jump on the maple train... tiger maple. Thanks again for the giveaway and fun mystery!

bcrano, I know you hope it's willow and Mark saves a piece for you! It was my initial thought as well. But maybe because I have it on the brain as my newest knife is sporting a diamond willow handle.

Is that diamond willow from Craig? Oh, and pics!

Mmhh, willow burl was my thought also, but the more woods I see, the less I know...

Spalted sycamore? I am comfortable with my ignorance, thank you!

Hax CLEAVERS RULE!!! :D

My best guess would be redwood burl. That stuff seems to be able to take on any colour and structure.
Thanks for the chance, Mark and good luck ye'all.

That is a spectacular block, by the way...

The winning post number is 41.
Congratulations Andrew H
Send me a PM with your mailing address and I will get it sent to you.

BTW: the wood is just plain old maple. I thought it looked pretty good though.

Awesome! Thanks, Mark!
