    Personal opinion: 1. Water management depends on type of stone and hardness of it. 2. Flat is a plus, but a dead flat surface will cost you $ as you are wasting out lots of your jnat. Personally I sharpen/polish on the uneven part of the stone to make it reasonably flat.

    Is it *really* true that coarse JNats are not worth bothering with?

    The purpose of coarse stones is to reshape. How fast it cuts is the only performance indicator for stones at the coarser level in my opinion.

    Personally, I don’t think the concept of grit should be used in JNATs. The scratch patterns and hardness should be what you consider
