Looking for some guidance on crafting for an Oysterman

Milk.... That's an awesome reference thank you. Jessef I'm basing it on what I put the hacksaw blade through to get it to snap... It held well in twisting/torque motion.

Looking for some guidance on crafting for an Oysterman

So I'm getting some good feedback on my first set of skinner/hunters (pass outs and "tell me what you think" knives) and the wedding gift (western butcher and serving/carver set) I made for a couple had a great showing over the Christmas Holiday- so I think my chops are getting better than "made...

Question about TUNGSTEN HSS for Cutlery and Breakdown knives

So in my reading I'm seeing cutlery generally goes for a higher Rockwell versus EDC knives- My normal hunting knives run 60 Rc- should I shoot for 64 and then "tune" it from there on subsequent blades?

Question about TUNGSTEN HSS for Cutlery and Breakdown knives

Thanks for the testing specs Merlin- I did the bend/beat/snap test and think the Tungsten is throughout the steel- not just the teeth- the grain structure is fairly fine with specks of what I think are carbides throughout the fracture plane. The blade snapped fairly cleanly without ragged...

Question about TUNGSTEN HSS for Cutlery and Breakdown knives

Thanks RD- I already have some M4 and M2 on order- these are a bit nostalgic as they were from an older gent that was a mentor. His family is the one who gave me the box after they were cleaning out his tool shed. I as well "inherited a variety of known steels for other uses as well. True on...

Question about TUNGSTEN HSS for Cutlery and Breakdown knives

No worries Jessf- whole blade is tungsten "silver steel" according to the marketing materials- and based on my initial testing.

Question about TUNGSTEN HSS for Cutlery and Breakdown knives

True- the 1950's through mid 1960's HSS with Wo was usually a 1095 base with about 18% Wo added from what I can gather- and the "Tungsten" filament was the standard of "Flash" photography for many years- it has a warm cast yellow-orange in the visible spectrum. I have downloaded several of...

Question about TUNGSTEN HSS for Cutlery and Breakdown knives

Wont be forging these- they are already thin and waterjet will profile them-

Question about TUNGSTEN HSS for Cutlery and Breakdown knives

First technical question posting- I have been given a box of old (1960's vintage) "Tungsten HSS" industrial hacksaw blades. These are .050 thick, 1.5" wide and 14 inches in length. The local meat packing guys use HSS blades for their "breakdown" knives and they seem to keep a wicked edge with...

    Grinding away

Hey Milk- there have been several postings regarding Aaron Goughs flat grinding jig- your situation is a perfect example of where it excels... you can thin and bevel accurately and most importantly slowly (creep up on it). Im no expert at HT but you say you have several feet of the 1084 left...

    WIP - The tusk

I have done some mokume for jewelry purposes with coins- the irregular surfaces of the coin faces are problematic- I used a hint from another forum and mixed my borax with methanol for a flux (methanol will actually dissolve the borax not just suspend it in solution). As well it will burn out...

Tapering middle section of 3pc laminate saya

If you are able to build a simple jig- the tapering process will be easy, repeatable, and most of all uniform across your projects. In another hobby I had need for specific angles filed/ground/sanded into blocks of woods and found that having a jig helped. I built a flat file jig like the...

    WIP - The tusk

Love the coin Mokume' idea- nice touch. Out of curiosity was there any carbon or buildup in the pocket that did not weld?

New guy trying to navigate the world of cutlery

Sorry if I made it difficult- writing after work and with a 2 year old running about probably is not the best editing/proofreading opportunity... :O I want to do both- cook and learn the skills in the kitchen... as well as be able to evaluate and prepare a good blade! I have made a few...

New guy trying to navigate the world of cutlery

Hey folks- thanks for approving me! I enjoy what I feel is a good knife- but hungry for more and to appreciate the qualities IN a good, better, and great knife... I have a mish-mash of made in china chef knives and the JC Penny knife block... (stop giggling)... but recently got serious about...
