High Resolution Microscopy Images of Whole Knife

Amazing stuff man! I know this is all very specialized equipment, but is there a setup that can get similar results without costing an arm and a leg?

    Knife findings

Sorry I don’t have links, but have discussed these knives at length with Tsukasa-san and the folks who commissioned this line. The tamahagane billet was forged by Shunji Kobayashi, a swordsmith in Shimane, and the watetsu taken from the same batch to use as cladding. There’s definitely a lot...

The cladding is watetsu from the same tatara, pattern welded with steel, so not regular cladding.

    Blade Finish question

Something like this. Just a way to add a more dynamic etch, and he does it quite well.

    Blade Finish question

Great question! I tried to get a good summary of the different finishes a while back, but this has led to more questions than answers haha. I can only speak towards Japanese makers, for which I think the main finishes are: migaki, mirror, loose abrasive bokashi/kasumi, bead blasting, kurouchi...

    mazaki knives

He engraves honsanmai on the reverse for the double bevels he forge welds. If it’s without engraving, I’d assume it’s from prelaminated stock.

Recommended (and available) stone finished knives

Interesting, was just talking about this with a retailer this morning. If talking about bevels that have been worked on at some point with a bench stone, but the final touch is loose abrasive, there are probably a decent number of makers in Japan. I feel like this is a marketing term to mean...

    “One-man” operations

Sorry, not calling your supplier’s word into question- just curious if there are warikomi makers that are using prelam, that’s all. I know it’s possible to order the configuration, and probably should have worded it better, but as a general question to the community, is anyone making warikomi...

    “One-man” operations

Sorry I don’t know who Junichi is, but Kataba is a bevel style, and not a billet type. You can make a kataba knife from a sanmai billet- TF is famous for this since they use the same sanmai prelam for both ryoba and kataba knives. If the billet is thick enough, you can even grind one of the iron...

    “One-man” operations

What is “real” warikomi? Is there prelam warikomi used for Japanese knife production?

    “One-man” operations

Ashi-san continues to make honyaki and fulfill orders, though placing an order without going through a wholesaler seems next to impossible now.

    “One-man” operations

Might want to add Tsukasa Hinoura and Hiroshi Ashi to the list. Tsukasa-san’s hand engraved lines and Ashi-san’s honyaki meet these criteria I believe.
