So I’m polishing a blade

So I’m polishing a blade and there are these mysterious pits in it now. I don’t know how they happened. Started at 400 and am at 2500.

the pores were probably there since they forged it.

It’s a cold steel I bought in the late 80s

Maybe they were just under the surface and were revealed by the polishing?

Like it was already said, they were likely always there. If not, they may have been abraded away over the years, by super small amounts of rust, but it's likely option a.
