I was curious how people ended up going from 'I'll get some nice knives and buy a shun/wusthof block' to... this.

TLDR - ordered custom knife for wife present, decided I wanted one, now have many more than one and seemingly no end in sight.

I'll start. My wife loves to cook but hasn't had much time the last, wow coming on 6+ years. I thought I'd upgrade her knife block as a gift. Did a bit of research and bought a wusthof block.

Soon after our 3rd child was arriving and it was her birthday. I had no idea what to get her and thought I'd get a custom chef to replace the one in the block. Made for her to feel 'joy' with when she did have time to get into the kitchen to cook for the (growing) family. Went down a rabbit hole, researching, found a maker, who when I called and told me although his books were closed (I had no idea because I found him via Google as I didn't use insta) he'd pop us to the back of his 2 year list.

After putting my wife in contact with him and realizing our kids were born weeks apart, and it was for a family he decided to put us to the front of the list. Bought, delivered, I had knife jealousy and decided I wanted one.

I bought one, then another, ordered a few more, found KKF and BST, suddenly had time on my hands for the first time in 15 years and an opening for a new hobby, realized I need 17 different types of knife each in multiple lengths from different makers and here we are.

I went into a small local knife shop called Apogee. They made/make? the Dragon Storm knives. The owner used to work for Shun and had a bunch of old one off knives. I picked up a Shun yes Shun Kramer in Damascus clad SG2. It looked exactly like the current Zwilling but had a Shun label. I also picked up a Shun Ken Onion. I think I spend $75.00 each. Not really knowing anything about them I put them both on Ebay and made a huge chunk of money (dont hate me I had no idea what I was doing). I took the profit and went to Portland Knife House. I walked out with a set of Mazaki Gyuto, Petty and Nakiri. From there I was pretty much hooked and now I want to try everything. Its funny that after dozens of knives from all around the world I just got another Mazaki this weekend.
As a side note I have had one of my makers add my logo to the knives he has made for me. In doing so I keep those ones rather than selling or trading. I have been trying to do that more with makers that I love and are willing just so I dont sell/trade everything.
