    The ultimate strop prep guide

Steve Kramer does a lot of writing on various forums about sharpening and in particular about how to make the perfect strop. Now for the first time most of his advice has been curated into a single blog post that can be found below. Since following his method of casing leather before making a...

    Tech Diamond Tools Paste

Here is a useful grit guide that I found on their website Grit guide: 200,000 Grit, 0 to 0.1 Microns – The Finest Polish 100,000 Grit, 0 to 0,25 Microns – Final Polish 50,000 Grit, 0 to 0,5 Microns – Final Polish 14,000 Grit, 0 to 1 Microns – Final Polish 8,000 Grit, 0 to 2 Microns – Mirror...

    Tech Diamond Tools Paste

The finest stone I have is a Shapton 2k. From there I usually just go to my Dialux green coated strop. I was about to get a 5k stone but then came across this range of pastes from Tech Diamond Tools. I had a lot of unused strops and I figure that for $21 for three syringes of paste (4k, 8k, 50k)...

Just a little winter Biltong snack

I don't usually need much of an excuse to make a fresh batch of biltong. But I have a tradition to always initiate a new knife on biltong!

I made a large strop that lives on the kitchen counter. Every knife gets stropped after use and before storing for next time.

Wusthof Grand Prix II or ???????????

I just took delivery of the Edgepro Apex sharpening kit and used it to really clean up the edge on the Grand Prix II. I'll see how that works over the next few days and then take a view on a new knife. Thanks so far for the responses.

Wusthof Grand Prix II or ???????????

Thanks Dave. I guess that sort of answers my question. The Gesshin Stainless, Suisin Western Inox, Misono Moly products are better price/performance than than the Ikkaku Donryu and the Fuji Cutlery mentioned in my OP.

Wusthof Grand Prix II or ???????????

We have many inexpensive kitchen knives. I have eventually managed to persuade my wife to never again use a serrated knife in the kitchen. My job is to just make sure that the others are always sharp. I enjoy sharpening so not a problem. She just does not want to have to keep on asking me to...

    More about biltong making

Nice Badger! When I ordered the box they asked if I wanted a name or logo on it. Honey Badger being a South African brand it made sense to have the logo a biltong machne! My home made plastic storage box I refer to in the article can handle about 20lb of raw meat and that's what I use on a...

    More about biltong making

Hi there! Many of you read the blog article I posted last year about my biltong methods and many of you contacted me for tips and help. No doubt you all have been enjoying the fruits of your labor! Many also liked the blog but found it too much hassle to gather the components to build the dryer...

    Leather strop

The ones I made with veg tanned latigo leather with smooth side up worked out very well both with an without compound. I am going to try and make one with horse hide to see the difference.

    Leather strop

I did a lot of reading on Bladeforums and found this information there. It apparently firms up the leather and also brings the silicates to the surface. If you're going to use compound then it will take the place of the silicates and also the quality of the leather is less important. However if...

    My new chopping board

A friend of mine decided to build his own pool table, from scratch. Among other woods he used birds eye maple, wenge, purple heart etc. Using the offcuts he made me this board. Not end grain yet but I hope to take it back to him and to turn it into an end grain board. I have been treating it...

    Leather strop

Drew, not sure where you are located. Plenty places to buy leather. Veg tanned, latigo etc. I wet and roll mine with a heavy roller. Then after it's dry I cut it to size and glue it onto a piece of wood. If you're going to apply compound to it it's really not that important which type you use...
