I’m after a nice mid-ish grit natural for edge sharpening.

Basically something I can finish on after 1/4k grit to achieve the fabled ‘refined but aggressive natural stone edge.

Thanks!

For natural edges > 4K I’d recommend a coticule. What I like about them is that they are hard without being super glassy. Easy to do both edge trailing and edge leading. I don’t think mine is crazy fast but still as fast or faster than an aizu. Aizu will be toothier / less refined though for sure. I don't think you give up that natural feeling edge though.

Can find at Ardennes for reasonable prices. Sorry just saw this was WTB and not a discussion thread!

Nah this is all good stuff, thank you!

To be honest I am more interested in BBW/coticules slightly moreso than a Jnat in this instance, I don’t know enough about Ardennes stones, but will add them into the listing.

Honestly I'd suggest just buying direct from Ardennes-Coticule. The quality/feel of the coti/BBWs I've received from them is superior to the other 2 vendors I've tried since I don't have the geologist x-ray vision of @cotedupy

I think it especially helps that you can just tell Rob your use case and you'll be assured to get one that's more knife-oriented than razor finishing.

Haha! Nah... I have / have had plenty of cotis that aren’t great for knives. It’s not an easy tell until you get something in hand. The main reason I got into straight razors a coupla years back was that I had an increasing number of stones that I knew were pretty posh (Thuris, Charns, Trans Arks, certain Cotis, &c.) that were just sitting around cos they weren’t good for knife sharpening. So two options:

a.) Sell ‘em. Make a bit of money, but; admin, packaging, trying to wrestle with post services and online banking systems, and having fewer lovely stones afterwards.

Or

b.) Use them. By finding a new absurd hobby to take up most of my spare time and money.

No-brainer really. ;)

@Ok__mode_6953 Depending on where you’re based in the UK for logistics, I’ve got a coti and a BBW from Cotedupy that you’re welcome to borrow and see what you think of them.

Well this is sounding a lot like a meet up! I’m now back in London (Clapham) full time. Don’t have all of my stones here; maybe 1/3rd, but that’s still maybe 50 or so, and you guys are welcome to come round play with them sometime.

And obviously I want to try all your fancy knives too Peter, but they’re probably not quite as heavy as a feck ton of rocks, so perhaps better to do at my place...
