Hello,
I just received my new Fu Rin Ka Zan TF petty and I can see a few problems (or maybe they are not I don't really know).

The knife is just so slightly bent. I couldn't get a good picture of it but when I put the knife on something flat, one side wobbles and the other doesn't. And It seems there is less than a millimeter. Is it a problem? Can I correct it?

The other thing is the bevel. It looks uneven. On the picture on the left, in the center, there seems to be a spot without a really pronounced bevel and the picture on the right, except the tip, the bevel is hardly noticeable. Does it just need a good sharpening?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Hello,

Most Japanese knives are not ground flat, so it is normal for one side (hopefully the right side) to "wobble" on a flat surface.

Laying a knife on flat surface is not a good way to gauge the straightness. The best way to know if your blade is bent is with your eyes.

This video should help in finding and fixing any problems.

The bevel is poorly done, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not sharp. Try cutting with it. Tomatoes and peppers are a good test to see if it is properly sharpened. Otherwise a sharpening or two should fix it.

Thanks I'll look at it. I looked with my eyes first and that's why I found that it bends a little.

And it does cut, that's why i wanted to know it was a problem

Does it wobble front to back or spine to edge?

Is your tip bent/broken or you're just asking about the bevels?

I don't concern myself with the edge bevels matching in size and appearance. If it is right-biased knife, the left edge bevel will often be thinner.

It wobbles a little tip to heel, so i guess front to back in this case? It's very slight, but like the last fourth of the knife (at the tip) is slightly bent.

there are two questions. but both are whether it's a problem that they are like this. Alright so I guess as long as it cuts, it doesn't matter for the bevel not being consistent on each side :)
Thanks :)

All my knives wobble a bit from handle to tip when on my magnetic rack - I assume it’s the distal taper plus the tip not being in line with the spine.

Your bevel does look wonky but I wouldn’t worry about it until the first sharpening. At that point you can work on making it more consistent, maybe with a coarse stone to cut a consistent back bevel before putting on a new edge bevel.
