I have searched previous threads for an answer and came up with District and Tokushu. Both look to be incredible options, however I was wondering if there is a forum member or brick and mortar a little closer to home(North Dakota) that could get me fixed up. Below is a list of the knives and services I am needing:

Isasmedgan wrought Damascus - spa day, going to bst

Wakui WH sujihiki - needs some thinning, left side secondary bevel getting thick.

Kipp WP- got a little rusty on my last move, I cleaned up most of it, a little more to do… this is my unicorn so I didn’t want to take it too far. Call it a refinish.

Spare mono- tried my hand at thinning, most of the way there but the bevels need some love, pretty wavy.

I can take pictures of all the blades if needed.

You can also reach out to Jon at JKI. They do good work.

Will do. I read on their website they are doing selective sharpening and no thinning/ refinishing but I am going to call and verify. Thank you!

Any updates if they do thinning? If not, have you found any other good options in US?
JKI will do it with some reservations. I have to send pictures, explain what I want and they will provide me a quote and date to send in when they have the time. The gentleman did say if the work was extensive like extreme thinning on a workhorse or fixing a really bad grind they may say no and recommend someone that specializes in belt work aka District. I think the guys name I spoke to was Doug, super nice to deal with.

Thanks for the update 👍🏻

I have ZERO reservations about District Cutlery. Everything out of their shop I have seen looks amazing and I don’t think I have ever heard a complaint. I was just wondering if there was any thing closer to home. D.C or LA is kind of the same thing for me, I might go either way. Might just man up and do it myself, who knows

For thinning, Ryan at District Cutlery is the best, but you will get charged about $80 for that. If you can afford it, go for it. Otherwise, look for other options or start thinking about buying stones and do it yourself. Intimidating in the beginning but it's fun if u have enough free time on your hands.

We are just limiting the kind of time-consuming work we take on, in order to be able to keep regular sharpening services running more consistently. Every time we open up for thinning and refinishing projects, we'll get a ton of them in just a day or two, and they can end up taking up to 2-3 weeks to complete. So currently, we've limited the number we will have in progress here at any given moment. But its still a service we currently offer.

Makes complete sense, thanks for the update. Being too busy is a good problem to have!

Standard thinning at District Cutlery is $45. Takeda or TF regrinding is more. They've done two knives for me and the work was simply outstanding. They would be my first recommendation, without reservation.

Do you know how much is the TF work is? I have one that I got second hand and it could use some attention. Needs general TF cleanup and has some light rust along the hagane that can be addressed at same time.
