Greetings kkf

Its my senior year and it is about time to start thinking about my senior project. I wanted to explore something in relate to knives, whether being abled to forge one which would be the coolest or just how to sharpen or use a knife. My school is in central Maine.

Open to all kinds of ideas and I’ll figure out how to make it work! Thanks kkf and hope everyone‘s enjoying their thanksgiving.

The senior project is really just a demonstration of you learning a skill, so in short, you’ll have to learn something that you could perform. Which mean it’ll require you present it whether video, presentation or perform the skill.

say if it’s sharpening and polishing, I would assume not allowed to bring the knife and physically demonstrate but abled to record video and progress
Do you have to demo the project? If so, can you have a knife in school?

Yeah learning to thin and sharpen is a straightforward one. Record a video of dull knife struggling and then and after video of it going through produce or whatever you'd like.

Aside from that, basic knife making could work too, quench and temper a grind a tiny knife.

Would not suggest razor sharpening necessarily since it's a bit more sensitive, but that's also another thing possible

I wouldn’t say I’m the best sharpener but I’m definitely capable of sharpening a knife to cut hair, so I guess doing sharpening wouldn’t be learning much? but I would love to tinker about restoring and thinning a knife which would be so cool.

On top of that, making a small knife or a kiridashi would be really cool. But something I would think about if possible.

Yeah restoring and thinning a knife could be good. Or learning how to straighten one with a bending stick, or a woodworking clamp as a lever, too (like a parallel jaw clamp).

So like a yanagiba or deba or usuba, etc. Making a wa handle is good, and how to install it via burn in. Or japanese woodworking tools. You can document the process of learning about them to create an object.

Also untwisting knives with a chisel hammer -- more advanced "sharpening" stuff

Making a small knife out of a simple steel can be good, too, going through the heat treat process
