Picked up the white 1 FM on the right and additionally a beautiful knife from Takada I ordered. But wanted to show y’all that the Kaiju is still in existence haha. I couldn’t bring myself to spend $1200 on top of the Takada.

Kaiju pricing direct from Konosuke is $1200 now? If so, sheesh, OG owners of the first few runs got even more of a bargain at the original price point. (Also TIL, I did not think that they would sell anything other than standard FMs at the shop unless I am completely misconstruing this post.)

If you don’t mind, what’s the new FM like now? Thinner? Heavier? Similar to old?

Yep. $1156 (no tax). What do you mean by your last sentence?

I thought Ivan @ToshoKnifeArts was the polisher for the Kaiju. Strange to see one in Japan if so. Could it be a prototype?

I am not actually quite sure since I thought it was both Myojin and Ivan but Tosho's sale page states otherwise. IIRC I believe that Ivan lives in Japan now but take that with a grain of salt since I'm no expert.

I suppose it's the knife nerd in me being surprised that they would have a Kaiju in-stock at the store. (I.e. much easier to purchase if one is in the area compared to other unicorn level knives.) Most of the Kaiju-level knives I know are usually sold online (except for Craig at Carbon where he will sometimes have some bangers for in-store only) or via raffle/waitlist.

Ivan is now in Kyoto and konosuke is has been looking for a sharpener. I don’t think they work together a lot anymore. The whole thing was stupid from the get go though, to be honest. Myojin did the rough grinding and then every knife took how many hours to finish? Five? Ten? It was done on bench stones, right? Not buffs and slurry like normal. You would have to pay Ivan more than the smith and myojin together if you were being fair and he was an independent craftsman with bills and insurance to pay. 1200 is more realistic in the Sakai system but still Tanaka gets less than 100 out of that.
