In America sale prices revolve around holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Is there a sale season for Japanese knives and if so what drives it?

I just buy when my favorite stores have sales, which is seemingly pretty random.

The Epicurean Edge has had a Cyber Monday sale for several years. Sale items are changed every four hours during the sale. They also offer a discount to forum members: http://www.kitchenknifeforums.com/showthread.php/12082-KKF-Members-get-a-discount

Korin has had sales that happen about twice a year. Subscribe to their newsletter for notifications. http://korin.us10.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=e2ae1231c60d63963651378f3&id=ecc470acac
Korin also has an "Industry Membership Program" that provides discounts: http://korin.com/Services/membership

Maksim has sales throughout the year. Subscribe to his newsletter to be notified: http://japanesenaturalstones.us2.list-manage.com

The best time is when your currency is strong vs the source country.

Every febuary knife wear puts masakage knives on sale. I'm guessing your in america so with the strong exchange and sales that would be the time to buy some. I'm planning on getting a kujira 240. But as they said sales are random. Just keep some $$$ on hold for when something you want pops up.
