    polishing: blade geometry

to check if the cutting edge is straight this is the view you should be seeing. Your eye depth of field is better than the camera here so more should be in focus at this distance but even with the tip blurry you can see it curves right. I usually like to check from the tip end but couldn’t get...

    polishing: blade geometry

Hey Noj, I'm a bit confused by what you mean by 'I can't see the blade road' so I just wanted to clarify... Is it that with one eye you are unable to focus on any of the edge? Or your eyes are able to only focus on one point of the edge and the rest of the edge goes blurry so you can't judge...

    polishing: blade geometry

One eye. If your eyesight is okay and you are able to focus on something a foot from your face then lighting is the key. I'm sure you can sight down a piece of paper or a dollar bill and see the curve at the edge. The thickness you are looking at isn't much thinner than that, the difference is...

How Important is it to you that your knife is forged?

My assumption is that forging a blank with a distal taper specific to the knife shape you’re making would be quicker than removing the stock required to achieve that taper. If the taper goes from 7mm to 1mm then (if you have a 7mm thick piece of bar stock there are areas you are going to need to...

How Important is it to you that your knife is forged?

The best knives I've owned, used, or sharpened have been forged. That could change and it may just be due to the fact that there is more care generally involved with a forged knife and not due to some magical grain structure or such that the forging created... As stated above I think a bunch of...

    polishing: blade geometry

Hey @noj, Sounds like a slight low as @ethopmson said. Pretty common for me when I move from higher pressure (either burnishing or aggressively thinning or just being stubborn and rushing). It usually happens in the middle of the knife and what I’ve done is put pressure on the handle and the tip...

A good stone to put between my 1k, and 6k in a polishing progression.

Going to second Chosera 3k. Sounds like you're polishing and it's such a useful and versatile stone for that. Shapton 3 or 4k is also a good option IMO.

    Receiving a warped/bent knife

Oh yeah, thick boi out of the spine. Same process for Warikomi. Really hard to tell from pics but it looks like there is a corresponding bend 1/3 of the way up on the spine. The nice thing about a San mai/warikomi knife is it's easy to correct and you're not going to snap it with a bending stick...
