Hello All,

My very first blade in Apex Ultra, the first of many to come. Because of the relative scarcity and price of this steel I intend to work all of it into san-mai so as to stretch the quantity I have as far as possible. The blade pictured was given a light etch followed by a quick rub with loose abrasive to better distinguish the cladding from the core. There is a visible quench line running through the cladding from the angled/ edge quench I used on this particular blade, with what appear to be subtle ashi emanating in two directions.

  • Blade: 240mmx39mm Apex Ultra/low carbon san-mai ~67 HRC, 1200 grit finish
  • Neck: 12mmx18mm
  • Handle: 130mm, tapering from 26.0mmx22.1mm to 22.1mmx17.8mm, burned oak, oil finished and waxed
  • POB: 45mm from handle
  • Spine: 3.28mm at the neck, 2.38mm at halfway, .78mm 1cm from the tip
  • Grind: flat to convex RH bias
  • Weight: 146 grams
  • Relieved choil and spine
  • Edge: .1mm
Asking $375 U.S shipped with insurance anywhere in North America, for shipping to Europe or Australia I will cover the first $32 U.S of shipping

That looks really nice, I bet it goes fast, GLWS

What do you think of Apex Ultra in use?
Thanks!

And I don't know yet, I haven't got it sharpened yet. Regarding how it works on the other hand, I can say it'd definitely harder to grind than 52100 at 65 hrc, or AEB-L at 63 hrc, and perhaps a little easier to hot short when forging than 52100. My guess is though, that it will be an extremely crisp steel to put on stones, and do everything 52100 does, just longer.

Is that handle grey, or a proper black? Can we get some pics in different lighting?
