My first and only experience was very positive, Niagara Falls, Canada. The renter converted her basement into a cozy two bedroom apartment, she even stocked the frig with basic provisions, and it was very close to the touristy bits.

Check out VRBO as well, we've had a few nice vacation rentals from there.
