Not Pappa G but when I do it:

Most members view threads using the "What's new" criteria. A "bump" brings that thread to the top. Even within the BST sub-forums a thread may fall off the front page and a bump will bring it to the top. You may see "TTT" (Take it to top) used in place of bump for same reason. It's kinda explained in the BST rules and guidelines.
