Can You Buy Ho Wood?

Poplar is similar. You can get that at hobby stores

I was going to say poplar too. (Avoid the pieces with green.)
Holly would look very similar as well (and is also soft like ho).

I've gotten a few blocks from them in the past and found basswood seems to be cheap. Any idea if it's similar?

Poplar is only a tad harder than basswood. Holly is about twice as hard.
Basswood is often used for carving because it's soft. It might get dinged up a little. IMO Holly would work better and its inexpensive.

Basswood is lightweight but extra extra soft similar to balsawood. I can deform it with my finger. Not sure how durable it would be as a handle.

holly in my opinion is nothing like ho. Some woodworkers call it white ebony. It's very dense, not super heavy but still much heavier than ho. Poplar does seem more akin to ho.
