After a long wait, my order for an Eddworks is in, which has me antsy thinking about customs, so I'm wondering who else has their books open, a waitlist, or just you all think is particularly worth approaching for a custom.

Not that I particularly need to place a bunch of additional orders right now, but.... it can't hurt to look, right?

Lucid makes gorgeous knives and is a pleasure to work with

Shihan’s list has been available on and off the past year. Unfortunately his shop flooded recently so he’s catching up on A2 now, this likely impacted his waitlists.

MSicard and Knot are both active on here
Lucid is a top tier choice. I love mine - the only WH / heavy midweight I’ll ever need or want.

Looking is free. Buying is...not. Perhaps you are monklike in your contemplations. I am not.

Lucid has been on my list for a while, have any of you tried both his standard 50:50 convex and thin convex grinds? Any recommendation between them?
I’m not sure about the distinction although I did ask for a thinner than WH grind. Given the length of the knife and what Travis is comfortable doing, I asked for (and received) a wide / tall bevel (compared to his usual) with nail flexing edge. I would say it’s Light Calvary at the heel, Thoroughbred from the maker’s mark to the spine curvature and then Greyhound to the tip. Distal taper is 3.6mm at heel > 2.5mm at mid and 0.6mm ~1.5cm from tip. With the taller bevels, this makes it an unbelievable cutter … the requested grind and distal taper also made the knife quite light compared to his ‘usual’ (ie manoeuvrable) but with enough mass to make cutting effortless - mine is 258mm x 57mm and 255g.

All of this is to say that Travis is very skilled and accommodating and you can probably ask for the grind / specs that suit your preferences.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions!

haven't tried both, mine is a standard 50/50. i only cook for myself and my bf, so im not really plowing through a lot of ingredients or meat, but so far i have 0 complaints. if you havent already i would email him and see if he can shed some light on the differences between the two. he's super approachable. might get a faster response if you DM on instagram if you have one.

ill also add fellipi appears to be open based on his insta and man i would love to try one some day. just slightly out of reach for me right now. https://www.instagram.com/fellipiknives

I have lots of knives I can use. A Custom saves me money because I say I won’t buy anything till my turn.
I’m at 129 on the list. Ed Mayhew is working on 80-90

I should start thinking about what I want.

Does someone have experience with the custom knives from SteelByLundbergs? They look really good

They sure do! Curious myself.
@ahhactive
Depends on who you are trying to order from. Mattias prob have the longest waitlist. My experience with Mattias have been nothing short of phenomenal,i prob talk to him more than i ever did with other custom smith combined.
This waswhat he made me.

Oh oh oh and best packing ever.

Karol Karys is open and about a 9 month wait
i'm not gonna claim his craftsmanship is bad and anyone who likes his stuff has no taste and makes bad recommendations or anything, but I really do not dig the aesthetic of like 80% of his work--and in a bunch of cases, it looks to me like it would actually get in the way of performance or comfort.
