Hi all, I live in Dublin, Ireland and am looking at my first proper japanese knife (I've had globals for about 15 years) there is nowhere here that I can see and handle them and was going to take a chance on an entry level Sakai online, as it happens im visiting munich for a couple of days next month and noticed a few knife shops and in particular Dictum, I assume this would be a good place to visit and purchase a knife, they say you can take your time and look about and try the knives, they would have to post it back for me as I can't bring it on the plane, any experience with the actual Dictum shop? I see they have a good range on the online shop, is it safe to assume there is a good stock in the actual store, (any recommendations for a sub 200€ 210 wa handle CS gyuto welcome also) thanks

At Dictum you can test knives. However, the prices there have also risen. Depending on what you are looking for. Select knives in the online store and ask whether they are available in Munich. Do not pay cash but with EC card (if possible), then you get 2% discount.
Sorry for my rusty English:cool:.
Peter
PS: If you go there on a Friday afternoon or Saturday, we could meet (if you like send PM).

If they ship, make sure they pack properly and protect the tip. I've seen several Dictum Shigefusa Kitaeji's tipped due to poor packing practices.

I'm from munich and enjoyed the store quite a bit.
You can try all the knives, they have designated try out versions, so even if they are not in stock, they might still have a try out version. even have still a Shigefusa in the showcase. But probably best to check if you are looking into something specific.

I found the stuff there not really helpful, they are not as deep into the knife topic. I feel their main concern is to make it clear to people that the knifes can rust and chip if not cared for properly, not much further knowledge. Also if you are into specs hunting, the don't have much information on the knives (like makers/steel/hardness etc.) and it is not displayed anywhere. After some time I figure that all the knives have a 6 digit number or so that you can search for in the dictum online store to get more information, that is the same thing as the stuff is doing when you have a question.
I bought a Masashi Petty there and really love it, they also have Gyutos of that line, but they recently raised the prices on those :(
