I just joined about an hour ago after learning of this forum from a Google search. Pretty terrific to discover such a huge group of knife fanatics.

Why am I here? About a year and a half ago, I retired my old block of Shun knives from 2008, gave them to a friend, and went on a quest to assemble a set of Japanese chefs knives to last me to the grave. I've now got 18 of them, which is probably 15 more than I really needed. Every one of them though makes me smile when I use it. I also went down the rabbit hole on YouTube watching countless videos on chef's knives, whetstones, and sharpening skills.

I think it's safe to say I'm hooked. From here out it's all about developing great knife skills and learning how best to sharpen anything that isn't nailed down.

Grandfather was a cod and lobster fisherman out of portland from 1935 to 1968. I lived in portland as a kid, now out out of Seattle, with relatives in Damarscotta, Portland, and freeport.
Welcome to the fricas!

1315,

My partner is a retired lobsterman, so needless to say it still shows up on the menu at home pretty regularly. Awesome to hear of your connection to Maine. I moved here from Chicago back in 1994 and lived and worked on an island (Vinalhaven) which is about 1 hr 20 min by ferry boat to the mainland. Beautiful place to live, but you've got to make your own entertainment. :) I'm now in Saco, about 12 miles South of Portland.

Had I not moved to Vinalhaven in '94, it would likely have been a trip West to one of the islands in Puget Sound.

Cheers,

Ruddy
