Hi
Thank you to administration for accepting me as a new member. !
I am trying to find some information about a butchers cleaver ( l think), found in my family’s possessions. It may have been my fathers, or my grandfathers. I remember my late mother telling me it was my fathers. And why she kept that is interesting to me, as they divorced when l was young, in 1971. So l think it may have been something of significance at one time. I know they lived and worked on a cattle station here in Australia at one stage. Everyone on both their sides of family have passed , so l cannot ask any relatives. I would like to hand it down in my family if it is authentic.
So if any members can shed any light upon this piece, about its authenticity, approx year made, or anything at all… that would be super.! I’d really appreciate some help, as l have researched the manufacturer at 4 sycamore street Sheffield England, but cannot seem to find one that looks quite the same.

It is in very good condition, like l mentioned, my mother kept it after dad left in 1971, it is quite heavy. Am posting some photos in the hope someone may be able to help.

Hi Sharon,

Welcome! Very nice knife you have there; I Wilson were one of the very best old Sheffield makers, so definitely worth cleaning up a bit and holding onto.

They actually had a distributor in Melbourne, I had a different style of old Butcher's knife (yours is a bone cleaver obviously) that was stamped with their name on the other side:

You can actually date these knives relatively accurately because the logo changed a bit at certain times. Coincidentally yours looks exactly the same style as mine above, which from memory makes it about 1900 +/- 10 years. There's a whole heap of info here if you're interested:

Hello. Looks to be in pretty decent shape with one moderate chip to the edge, and a seriously dehydrated handle.
As far as preservation goes I think the first step would be oiling the handle.
