Instagram phone number link reset

Twice now someone in the knife community (but that I dont personally know) has asked me for my phone number to retrieve their account.

“I’m tryna add my phone number to my IG so I can get a link to login on my new phone I got today for some reason it ain’t working it keep saying I can’t use my phone number please can you help me out?”

what’s going on here?
Scam? What are they trying to gain?

yes, someone tried to phish me by telling me they wanted to add me to their account and launch a new line of clothing. I remembered a maker posting the account got hacked. I was suspicious to begin with. Then I got texted a link… no way.
Never give your info away.

Yeah the only reason I had any conversation with the persons is because they are known people in the knife community

They've probably had their account stolen.

Reminder to set 2FA everywhere, use different passwords for every site, etc.

I talked to one of the victims, once they have out their phones, the scammers got past their 2FA. I don’t know this person beyond some IG chats, but I have no reason not to believe them.

I always tell everyone to use 2FA whenever possible, I mandate it for my employees.
