hi all

just got my first decent stone a Shapton Kuromaku (pro) 1000

so I know they are not soaker stones and the instructions say that you should not soak the stone
"Don't soak our stones for more than 30 minutes, because this may cause the stone to become softer." (from Shapton)

so if i leave the stone in its holder wet for more that 30mins am i going to affect it,
take last night for example, i had just got it and was messing about for a couple of hours in between doing a bit of cooking etc
the stone sat in its holder with residual water in the holder around/under the stone, is that a problem?
i only have it a day and want to start on the right foot

and when storing...just dry the stone and the holder off and put away or would you leave the stone out of the holder
for longer?

many thanks

I’ve always wondered … if I’m sharpening on a stone for 60 minutes, wetting regularly… how am I not violating the 30 minute guideline?
You're just getting it wet.
Not surrounding all sides with water and allowing it to seep in for that amount of time. Liters or gallons VS milliliters or ounces.

Definitely, Shaptons are no soakers, but neither magnesia based. They are basically ceramics, and not much can happen if you leave one by accident for a longer time in water. Not sure it's a good idea with the finest ones, though. I'm not going to try it overnight with my 12k. Not much to worry about with the 1k. @knifeq2121 is right.
