Looks like a different process in action. The OP's looks to be a delamination of the core from the cladding ie defect in forging. The one in pass around likely occurred during the heat treatment and quench.some discussion of that here:

Chances are good the crack extends into the handle although shouldn't be an issue for corrosion if you seal the visible bit. What remedy are KW offering?I wonder if I should take the handle off and see if it extend to the tang as well
