As usual I'm in a knife buying mood and I see some blades that pique my interest. I saw a konsosuke sakai HD2 270 suji selling for $388. Is this a worthwhile value?

When doing some research, it seems like on average the knife used to sell for cheaper. I would like to avoid overpaying and would rather maximize value with something like a Morihei Hisamoto Hagane suji; if the value is not there with the Konosuke.

'Konosuke' and 'good value' are generally contradictory terms. If this is really what you're looking for you can get something extremely similar by getting an Ashi Ginga, just the steel type will be different.
Whether this is what you should be looking for depends mostly on what you want to use it for.

Personally I don't think the Morihei has good value either judging by the photos; it looks very similar to entry level yo-handle SK-steel stuff, at a far higher price.

My nenox sujihiki is very flexible/soft and I am looking for a suji or slicer that is stiffer and harder.
I tend to use my slicers/sujihiki as my primary knife (some prep and on the line).

Thank you for the awesome answer and advice. I still have lots to learn about some of these names and their reputations. I recently learned from my mistake of purchasing a Takefu knife that just really didn't work for me.

That's not a bad price. I have the same suji in 300mm length from Bernal Cutlery. I like it a lot. I found some web sites (e.g., CKTG) that listed lower prices, but they had been out of stock for some time, so I don't think those lower prices were representative of what the HD2 sujis are going for now.

I like the HD2 sujihiki because it is quite thin but still pretty stiff.

I think you might have just sold me on it. Thats exacctly what im looking for; thin but stiff.
I took a look at the Ashi Ginga, and while the shape and profile are almost exactly the same, the 59 hrc worries me a little. The price is much better on the Ashi Ginga though.

If it makes you feel any better, my 300mm was a lot more expensive than your 270. Bernal was the only place I could find it, though.

If they were being honest I think most men wouldn't mind an extra 30 mm...
