Google has a fabulous site called the Google Cultural Institute. It's sort of like a virtual museum, and it's astounding.
There's a subsection called "Made in Japan" that covers lots and lots of different traditional Japanese hand made objects.
Anyway, I know there's a fair bit of appreciation of Japanese crafts here, and there is an exhibit about sword making, so if you're interested check it out.
