Hello All,

I recently developed the capacity to produce crucible steel (wootz) and so this one of the first of many yet to come. It's a very labour intensive process but very satisfying. This blade has a calculated 1.90%-1.95% carbon which is on the higher end for crucible steel. The pattern is quite fine and exhibits a faint ladder pattern. I'll attempt watered patterns on future blades. There's really no describing the full extent of the detail in steel like this, it's just packed. I look forward to experimenting with other patterns and compositions.

I'm short on maker's mark stamps at the moment so I'll be reserving the few I have left for completed customs and purchased blades. If this blade sells I'll add it on prior to shipping.

Macro shots of the pattern. The original pictures I took really lost detail after being compressed by the program I use for watermarking plus being uploaded to KKF. These show a lot more detail.

Ignorant question: What makes wootz difficult to polish?
I have almost zero experience with wootz but I have tried polishing it once. The hardest part is getting the topography to really stand out and then creating the contrast to really see the detail of the steel. I have also been advised to use nital acid (which I don't have on hand) diluted with alcohol/water to really bring out the structure. I have also seen on forums that talk about wootz some obscure "recipes" for etching.

I still have a ton to learn, which means lots of testing and especially errors/mistakes which means it will probably take me a lot of hours 🥲

Ignorant question: What makes wootz difficult to polish?
Etching aside, wootz has a very high iron carbide content and the carbides tend to be larger. The pattern itself is the carbide banding. It's harder to hand-sand than 26c3, or W2 or 52100, but not quite as bad as Apex Ultra.

God that’s gorgeous. The fact that you just up and decided to learn wootz is also freaking amazing. Well done!!
Thank you! It wasn't so spontaneous though, it was on and off study for about 2 years before I actually attempted it, and I had issues with my first furnace and yeahhh....
