The blade
For this project Matt decided to do something quite different and come up with a Sujihiki with a wolfram special steel. This steel is close in specs to 1.2442 and has a tungsten content of 2.23%. It is a steel that is quite difficult to work with and it eats sandpaper/belts at a crazy speed! Other than the fact that this steel gave us a hard time, Matt's work is once again impeccable. The length of 270mm and the balance point which is about 5cm after the heel makes the knife handle super well. The grind is slightly convex along the entire length of the knife.
The visual
This blade offers a multitude of details on its surface. There is the banding which is apparent on the martensite and the pearlite in addition to having magnificent ashi attached to the nioi-guchi. For me the challenge was to choose the right direction for the polishing and I even started again 2 times because the first version with the mirror pearlite was not to my taste. Now the martensite is mirror with a slight hazy effect which lets the banding stand out. The pearlite is milky and still offers a slight reflection. I believe that this version offers the best of both worlds without having too strong a contrast between the two steel hardnesses.
The handle
For the handle I decided to go with Turkish walnut for the base. I simply love this wood. Towards the end of the handle you can see some beautiful black veins that have been placed so that they are visible when the knife is horizontal. There is a little curly effect on certain points and by playing with the light this handle offers so much to look at. The cap is made of Corian synthetic stone and I chose this one for its cream color which goes well with the color of the wood. A black micarta spacer creates a little contrast between the two materials. This is a handle that I really like and I am happy that it is highlighted on this project!
The backstory
Matt and I decided to collaborate together to offer very unique knives with an attention to detail and finish. Being both Canadian and passionate about Honyaki blades, this collaboration highlights all of Matt's his in-depth knowledge of steel and blacksmithing. It was only a matter of time before we could join our shared passions together.
Every week we talk about future projects (some are crazy) that we would like to accomplish together. That's the very essence of our collaboration: pushing our limits, learn to become better and improve in our fields of expertise. We're already like an old couple and Matt is the grumpy one. He will say the opposite, but it's not true.
