Old Opinel Carbone #12

Just put a shaving sharp edge on my old Opinel that lost & found couple years later open position covered with layer of rust. Had major pitting. Handle completely covered in fungus spalting.

Like the simplicity of ring locking system even the little notch that locks blade from closed position.

Vertical marks were from removing rust with belt sander & bucket of water. Major pitting on both sides.

Saw your photo of this in the handle finish thread and was going to ask if you’d done a custom re-handle of it.

I guess in a way you did…

Yeh just hand sanded it with mask on didn't want to inhale fungus dust finished at 1K grit. Put 3 coats of 50/50 pure Tung oil & clear bullseye shellac

Who would have thought to make an opinel look way better you just have to not take care of it, and leave it to rot.

Knife Nerd hopeless case. When I sanded rust off my old blade had considerable amount of pitting. So bought another # 12 figured would put nice blade on spalted handle. Never did. After cleaned up blade sanded & coated handle threw it in work drawer in garage covered up forgot about it
Was reading folder thread some posted couple years ago had custom blades put in Opinel. Had been using my newer Opinel dug out the spalted & put a very sharp edge on it.

Since it's perfectly usable blade decided to take newer #12 & make it spalted too.

Shot plenty WD 40 in swing & ring area. Also oiled the blade. Used blue painters tape 3 layers over oiled blade. Then put 3 layers of tuff sticky duck tape over the blue tape.

High up in the valley plenty rain in winter even fast moving windward showers spill over the sumet ridges onto us. Plenty fungus & bacteria in the rich volcanic soil.

I gave someone my opinel. But i was considering buying another just to make a blade to put in it a while back
