Keeping your account safe:

You'll never be able to 100% secure your account. There are steps that you can take to deter bad actors, from being able to take over your account. The idea being, it'll be hard enough to get in, that they'll move onto another target.

  1. Use two-step authentication. This will help stop someone from being able to log in from an unknown device to your account.
  2. Sign up to https://haveibeenpwned.com/ This website is a great resource to find out if your email has been leaked in a data breach. There's also a section to check if your password has been leaked.
  3. Use a strong password. Use the longest, most complicated password you can come up with, that you can remember. Do not repeat words or numbers. No consecutive numbers or letters (123456, ABCDEF). DO NOT REUSE PASSWORDS!
  4. Use up-to-date antivirus and scan your computer regularly. Do a full system scan at least once a month.
  5. Use a password manager. I'd recommend an offline one, Bitwarden or Keepass. An online connected one will work also. Just depends on how much work versus convenience you're willing to work with.
This is not meant as a completely comprehensive guide to protecting your account. These are just some basic guidelines to follow, to make your account less attractive to would be scammers.
