Any ideas for a chemical that will remove the black text (pictured) while leaving the damascus unaltered? I can tolerate the miyabi logo, but this text is just much. Thanks!

I can’t think of any way to remove it without affecting the logo - that being said I’ve sanded/polished my Shun to get out some scratches, removing the logo in the process. Putting on a kasumi and/or re-etching with some diluted muriatic acid were ways to bring back the contrast in the Damascus. Both methods looked great - but it never looked quite like the factory etch.

Possibly, though it might have to be a matter of trial and error. Meths or acetone would probably be where I'd start.

Sanding or scrubbing it off and then re-etching is probably going to be easier though. Don't ask me about the chemistry at play but FWIW - at work we use ferric for damascus etching, nitirc for most other stuff. Damascus etching is also helped by repeated goes, with a light wire wool brushing in between.

Here's one I did yesterday...

Stunning work! I always get recommended to buff/sand/scrubbing after etching but I find it always removes the etch. Is there a particular kind of wire wool you’re using?

Ah I don't know the of wire wool I'm afraid, it's quite fine though. Also the wire wool is only in between dunks in the ferric; it removes some of the surface etching, but deepens the overall penetration when done with say three or four etches in succession. Though after the last etch I wouldn't use wire wool.

All of that might be irrelevant though as I've just looked properly at your original pic and noticed - it's a stainless damascus. I know sod all about stainless damascus etching, but I'm guessing a lot of what I've said may not apply. Sorry!

Just grind it off, and repolish it, and etch if you need to.

I wonder if soaking it in pure acetone for a while might do it?

etching that into a blade is worse than putting it in the dishwasher

That part is just a sticker.

I can't tell if you guys are joking or not so i just had to mention it.
