Hey y'all!

My parent's home in Asheville, NC was destroyed by the flood waters of the Swannanoa River. Not in the floodplain and in a rush to get out early in the morning as the river rose (and frankly thinking their 30ft high second story would be sufficient to keep it from flooding), I lost about 2/3rds of the knives I've collected over the last 10-15 years, all my japanese natural stones, and most of my synthetic and diamond stones. Luckily, I do have a small portion of knives back in France at my in-laws house. However, I lost a bunch of rare and in some cases very special knives to me. The biggest sour notes for me are the Kato gyuto I bought from Morihei on the trip to Japan when my wife and I got engaged, as well as raft of older or hard-to-replace blades from Robert, Trey, Will, Rader, and Yanick. I was quite attached to my natural stones too, many of which came from members here or direct from Japan. Of particular note were a giant, gorgeous hakka iromono, a couple brick ohiras, and a silky nakayama suita from CKC.

I wanted to make this post mostly as a little farewell tribute for these knives. I also collected all the random photos I had happened to have left on my phone into an album that you can find here:

Jesus, I would literally commit seppuku. I hope your family is alright. I have been to Ashville for the first time last year, and it's surreal to see the damage.

Much later when more important things are handled first, I wonder if some of these western makers who normally don't take new custom orders would help you out with replacements due to the circumstances. Maybe some would even be willing to take part in making knives for raffle/auction to help pay for relief efforts to those affected.

Damn dude... I'm sorry.

At the end of the day, you and your family are safe and that's what matters.

Any chance you have proof of purchase for these? Insurance might be an option.
Yeah, unfortunately because loss of possessions was flood related, home insurance doesn’t cover it. Normally it would, but that’s how things go sometimes. Anybody who’s anywhere near a floodplain or the coast, take this as a learning moment.

Stay safe, man. Hurricane seasons are getting increasingly bonkers. Someone told me Milton went from a tropical storm to cat 5 in under 24hrs, insane.
Yeah, I was in florida just yesterday and my cab driver to the airport told me that it a small storm seemed to be on its way and that she wasn't going let the weather fear mongers get the better of her.

It escalated super fast.

Oh no! So sorry to hear this.

Glad you and your family are safe though.

These storms are supposed to diminish fast after landfall. I don't think Helene got that memo. Lot of tragedy along the path here in Fl and along the way.

We got wind and rain and it was over. Some coastal friends lost homes and possessions but thankfully not lives. Milton may be a different sort.

Best in your recovery.
