Should a knife handle be parallel to the spine of the knife?

Surely there isn't a problem having it at an angle, if that suits a particular user?

For instance - my better 1/2 (who has good knife skills and has worked in kitchens) always uses a hammer grip and rocking cut, on any knife. And I would've thought tilting a handle up slightly on a traditionally-profiled Japanese knife would work well for her...
