I’ve decided to release three of my knives. They have all seen very little use and are in excellent condition. As a package I’m prepared to sell the three knives for $1950 plus shipping and insurance. I’m prepared to receive offers on individual knives and will sell them individually if satisfactory offers are received for all of them. I strongly prefer a single sale and shipment to one purchaser and have discounted the package price accordingly. I am not looking for trades.

Here are some details on individual knives.

Yanick Gyuto

Blade length … 263mm
Edge Length … 252mm
Depth at heel … 65mm
Weight … 274gms

135cr3 core with wrought iron cladding, Madagascar rosewood handle with an imitation ivory spacer. Previous owners reports an original edge used two or three times. Unused by me.

Newham Gyuto

Blade length … 247mm
Edge length … 237mm
Depth at heel … 53mm
Weight … 232gms

This is a custom knife and saya made for me by Will Newham. It is made from RWL34 stainless steel with a ringed Gidgee handle and saya with a brass bolster and accents. This knife has seen very little, if any, use.

Spare Gyuto

Blade length … 253mm
Edge length … 251mm
Depth at heel … 56mm

I’m embarrassed to say that I have misplaced the exact purchase details on this knife. I bought it on BST from a KKF member and believe it to be one if the original MCX release knives. I believe it to be 2C63 mono steel construction. Handle material unknown but offering a nice brass bolster. It is a very nice knife, worthy of a home where it will be properly used rather than lanquishing in my collection. It is unused by me.

Would there be duties shipping this package into the US since the insured/declared value will exceed $800? Any idea what those duties would look like for the buyer?

I received a package from Canada recently and did not get charged a duty fee.

Was the declared value over $800 USD?

I’m asking because I’ve always kept strictly below the $800 threshold for international purchases. This is one example of someone purchasing a certain something (I’m sure it was $800+) from Canada (Tosho) and getting hit with substantial import duties. If the consensus is that high value packages are frequently coming through unscathed, then that…changes things…

It depends on the shipping company, and even then, it's based off a coin flip lol. I've gotten charged and not charged.

but usually, $800ish should be like $40-$50 in customs fees. any higher, you should email the shipping company and ask for a re-evaluation.

if you've got more questions, ya can dm me.

Yes... it was 6 higher end knives but not from a business...Came through Usps

This is not the forum for this but I would like to comment. I just recently recieved a package from the EU. When first billed the exchange rate was under $800.00. By the time it was processed $809.00. Here comes the fleecing. It was sent UPS . Detained in customs. Another UPS owned company charged me a customs assist fee $38.00. One top of that the taxes.

Into Canada, UPS Standard is where they rake you for money as brokerage cost is minimum plus a percentage of the declared value. UPS Worldwide Expedited charges a low fixed fee ($10, IIRC) plus of course our HST.

Sorry, might not be best place to discuss. But what do you guys use for shipping to Canada, because I feel like I’m funding UPS these days

Any other countries mail > Canada Post = $10 + HST value of the package (if it gets checked)
DHL = $20 + HST value of the package
FedEx Express = I haven't been hit yet (but this has all been from The HomeButcher so could be the way it's declared)

Agreed. For fedex, if you have an account set up with therm, you only pay hst/customs for packages into Canada.

It was interesting to find knives do not incur any additional customs though, just hst.
