King KDS combo v Cerax Combo

I would suggest you just get a solid 800-1000 grit stone and a cheap flattening plate (sk11 worked fine for me). The shapton kuromaku 1000 is highly regarded here and is very cheap. I have a suehiro cerax 1000 and I permasoak it; pretty good stone. Also, for convenience, take time to consider if...

    Toyama Knives

I always wondered why Toyama and Watanabe knives look the same and reading the posts (said and unsaid) in this forum, I made my own conjectures about it. Little did I know that Watanabe doesn't make knives. So his photos of forging knives is all for show. I'm so appalled

Long term knife storage tips for carbon steel

Renaissance wax? Otherwise, camellia oil and wrap it with plastic wrap and place the knife in its box. VCI paper would work as well, but as others have said, it expires.

    Question about break-in time/load up/polishing abilities on Shapton #16000

That may be the case. However, I don't use a magnetic rack nor have I used the knife near any magnets. So I was wondering why it happens. I'll look for a way to demagnetize it. I don't experience the gummy residue on my carbon knives. I've also tried sharpening an AUS-8 one but it doesn't load...

    Question about break-in time/load up/polishing abilities on Shapton #16000

You mentioned that you were getting something sticky on the blade. I noticed that too on my cheap knives. Maybe because of the stainless? That's my best guess. Mine is sort of a gummy paste that sticks to the edge and mostly at the tip of the knife and I have a bit of a trouble removing the...

    Cleaver advice and recommendation

What do you guys think about the Kurosaki cleaver? It's blue super cladded in stainless. I'm in the market for a cleaver same with OP. I have a CCK 1303 and I like how nimble it is. I know the Kurosaki is shorter than the CCK, but they're about the same weight and I don't like anything punching...

    Sealing/lacquering stones (synthetic and natural)

Looks good. What kind of urushi do you use? I tried looking at different websites and they list different kinds of it and I don't mean just the color. Also, do you thin the urushi itself? If so, what do you use?

What stone do you think this is?

I see, that makes sense. Thank you, childermass! I'll try raising a slurry first with a diamond plate and see where that leads me. I was under the impression that natural stones, the good ones at least, impart a better aesthetic to the demarcation between soft and hard steels. So I was wondering...

What stone do you think this is?

It might be just the light. I'm not that good at colors, but the stone turns a somewhat glossy black when wet and you can see a reflection on it. I tried looking at asagi jnats on youtube and the swarf they produce looks brown. This stone's swarf is more of a gray/black color. Anyway, thanks...

What stone do you think this is?

That's the thing: it's not muddy! It's so hard. However, it does show scratches easily if your angle is wrong and when you're flattening it, but it's hard to raise a slurry. I think I have to use a diamond plate first to get it going but I haven't tried that yet.

What stone do you think this is?

Sorry for the late reply. Here's the stone wet. I also tried the stone with a small kanna. The bevel is not perfectly flat yet, but you can see the polish in the middle somewhat. I think it polishes the jigane too much? What do you guys think? edit: feedback is relatively smooth. Kind of like...

What stone do you think this is?

So someone recently sold me this stone. Is it an aoto? What do you guys think? I lapped both sides flat. It shows scratches easily. Thanks!

    Hi! A question

Okay, I might try that. Thanks! Just hoping it wouldn't break or something. It's a water stone, I think. It had a sticker saying IR-1300 and I checked the Naniwa line and it says it's a silicon carbide stone, FWIW. Might try that oven cleaner first, thanks! Worst case scenario, I'll try the...

    Hi! A question

So I found a whetstone (Naniwa 150) at a yard sale and it seems that there's some oil on it. When I palm the surface with water, the spot where I think the oil is dries instantly while the rest of the stone face is still covered with a film of water. I've already tried soaking it for hours (with...
