I was given a couple old stones Saturday. I tried them out on a sub-par knife with shirogami 1 and iron cladding. My comments about speed and feel refer to sharpening.
#1 is a 6K, on a dai. It looks and feels like it has inclusions of different material. Hard, quite slow, and pretty muddy. And it SMELLS. Oiled leather? Machine shop? Sweaty horse? I’m not quite sure. There is absolutely no beading-up of water, so I don’t think it was ever mistakenly used as an oil stone. The smell is definitely coming more from the stone then from the wooden dai. The box says S-1, and “6000” is on the affixed label.
Any ideas regarding composition and best use?
Wet:
Dry:
_______________ ______ _______________
Stone #2 is white, also hard, quite fast, and coarser. It appears to be of uniform material. I only have the bottom of the box which has no English except “King”. There were very few bubbles from immersion, so I tried it as a dampened splash-and-go. Were King stones color-coded? I’m wondering what the grit and best use might be.
Thanks very much if you got this far and can say something about them.
