Yesterday after arriving in Paris from my house in the South, I went to see Marina @atelierdomaparis to discuss sharpening. I wanted to revisit sharpening skills with someone who is doing this all the time. Marina is French-Japanese. She speaks French, Japanese and English. I spent the afternoon learning about various stones, her sharpening methods and discussing about edges.
Some specific topics discussed -
pressure points
Holding the blade
Lead hand, guiding hand
Challenges of tip sharpening
An awareness or consciousness of sharpening feel I had not really explored or experienced before,
Trying different stones
Marina offers classes and you can read more about her on their website. If you are near Paris I can highly recommend a visit to see Marina.
