So serious eats had an article pointing out the well known fact that bamboo cutting boards really suck. But it got me thinking since they are filled with silica could they be a good stropping material?

Has anyone tried to use a bamboo cutting board to strop. Is it obviously a bad idea?

TIA

You probably could but there are so many better options. Why would you want to

I don't think bamboo would have enough give in the surface. Would probably do more harm than good.

Give it a shot? Worse that can happen, I think, is the knife dulling a little bit.

Well thinking about it more based on what Legion75 said, it would probably be worse than just using cardboard, which also had silica crystals I have been told

Yeah. Leather has silica as well. Newspaper works too. Balsa. Lots of options without slapping the edge on hard wood.

You can strop on just about anything. Give isn't a requirement, after all, we strop on stones. That said, I don't think it would be all that effective beyond some very light feathery-edge straightening.
