Best all around lapping/ flattening stone

Hello KKF!

I want to buy a nice flattening stone that works for most stones without spending hundreds of dollars. I own some soakers, a few shaptons pro, and I am about to buy my first natural stone. Any suggestions?

I once lusted for an Atoma, but was always deterred by the premium price. Never ended up getting one after all these years and haven’t missed it.

I love the Atoma with the handle on it (provided you only want to use it for flattening). Picked it up for just 10,000 yen from Miura but looks like the 140 is out of stock at the moment.

Have it and love it, Jon use it in his store, too. If it is good enough for him then it is good for me.

I use the Atoma on my Okudo, my Nakayama, and my shoubu. They absolutely love it!

I have not tried the atoma, I picked up the CKTG 140 plate currently going for $30 and it gets the job done. I’ve had it a few years.

I don’t want spend hundreds of dollars like I said. I guess I could set the limit at under 160$

Why is there 140 grit version and 400 grit? Do they do different patterns on the stone or something?

I’m a profession sharpener and hobby polisher. 140 stoma for flattening, 1200 atoma and nagura for slurry management.
