I'm in the process of a divorce and need to find a reliable expert to provide liquidation values for the knife collection. My spouse found one local expert, but their values appear very high when compared to ebay, recent transactions on here, etc.

Does anyone know anyone that might be considered an expert? Mostly japanese knives (katos/shigs/honyaki/etc) plus some domestic custom knives as well. My list in the profile is out of date, but speaks to the types of knives I have collected.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Hmmm, I’m assuming you’re negotiating? You can offer your own realistic valuation as the level at which you would take the knives while she gets the cash equivalents from your joint savings or investments.

Or she can take the knives at her valuation against you taking the cash equivalents.

Just a variation on one person cutting something in half but the other person choosing which half they want.

Sure. But even then you should know how a judge would evaluate value. In my country the forced-sale value is the norm, which is only a fraction of the private sale value. It can even make a big difference whether you consider the knives as a collection or as individual, randomly brought together.

Thanks everyone for thoughts, we were able to hash this element of the divorce out- honestly much to my surprise.
Winning.
