Hi all,

I have some pretty heavy patina on a knife of mine that came with a natural stone finish. Will using flitz to remove the patina affect the contrast? Asking purely out of curiosity, I know contrast can be restored.

Thanks!

Most often times flitz will remove the natural stone finish but it is easy bring back for the most part. I learned this when I tried to remove the patina from a used White 1 Fujiyama I purchased.

I removed the patina with flitz applied to a felt pad. Brought back the polish with uchi powder, windex, and worn 2000 grit sandpaper. I’ll attach pics below.

And finally the stone powder

Thanks! Wow I didn’t realize that a San mai could look so monosteel-like without the contrast.

Thanks again!

The obvious solution here is to use a very fine finger stone, or diamond powder mixed with stone powder and felt pad w/ water
This would remove patina without sacrificing contrast? What brand of diamond powder do you recommend?

As an update, I used mud from a small Aoto I had sitting around. I figured this would be a great way to test it’s abrasive power. Here’s a before and after.
